Pre-Requisites

Enrolled in/ recently undergraduates or graduated from a Master’s or PhD programme related to Heritage Planning.

Committed to participating in both the online and onsite (i.e. Antwerp) activities of the module.

MODULE DESCRIPTION:

This program is developed following the Heriland model to give graduates an opportunity to experience through collaborative training activities the latest developments in cultural heritage and landscape planning research.

  • Do you want to discover how heritage planning research is helping to address urgent societal challenges?
  • Do you want to gain hands-on experience with the latest research methodologies and policy frameworks?
  • Do you want to participate in discussions about the future of heritage planning research, education and policy?
  • Do you want to rethink your career opportunities in academia and beyond?

Then, this Erasmus+ Blended Intensive programme – including a 5-day programme in Antwerp and online collaborative activities – is the right one for you.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

On completion of this module, those who have participated should be able to:

  1. Discuss the relevance of heritage landscapes and heritage planning to major 21st-century societal challenges, including the spatial turn, democratisation, digital transformation, shifting demographics, and environmental change.
  2. Explain the principles of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), Heritage Impact Assessments, and Participatory Heritage Practices as research strategies.
  3. Analyse career opportunities for graduates with expertise in heritage landscapes and heritage planning.
  4. Identify trends, strengths and weaknesses in heritage planning research, education and policy. 
  5. Evaluate the main insights you have derived from the module for your own academic studies and professional career.

ACTIVITIES AND APPROXIMATE TIME INVESTMENT:

9-13 October

Online kick-off meeting: introducing Heriland, the participants and the module (3 hours)

Online group assignment: review as a group texts and videos related to heritage planning in relation to one of the societal challenges central to the module (18 hours)

13-17 October (in Antwerp)

The programme starts on Monday, 13th October at 09:00 CET and ends on Friday, 17th October at 14:00 CET.

Hands-on training sessions: two half days, dedicated to Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) and Participatory Heritage Practices. 

Interactive workshops: one half day, exploring Heritage Impact Assessments (HIA) relevance of heritage planning research.

Excursions: self-directed and guided excursions in and around Antwerp

Key note lectures: prominent international experts lecturing on the interplay between heritage planning and major societal challenges

Networking event: meet potential employers from academia and other sectors

Agenda setting: round-table sessions exploring the future of heritage planning research, education and policy

17 October – 10 November (online)

Blog post assignment: write a Blog post about an aspect of the module in relation to your own academic studies and/ or professional career (24 hours)

Peer review: review the draft Blog post of another participant and receive feedback on yours in return (4 hours)

ASSIGNMENTS

Online assignment: review texts and videos related to heritage planning in relation to one of the societal challenges central to the module, due 13th October 2025.

HIA, HUL and Participatory Heritage Practices Assignments: bullet points capturing the opportunities and challenges for applying these approaches in your academic studies or research, due 10th November 2025.

Keynote lectures assignment: your three main take-away points for each of the keynote lectures, due 10th November 2025.

Societal relevance assignment: your three main take-away points from the workshop in which you participated, due 10th November 2025.

Agenda setting assignment: your three main take-away points from the agenda setting round table in which you participated, 10th November 2025.

Blog post assignment: write a Blog post (between 1000 and 1250 words) about an aspect of the module in relation to your own academic studies and/ or professional career, due 10th November 2025. A selection of Blog posts will be disseminated through the Heriland Blog.
