The fellows are also trained to collaborate and exchange knowledge in joint, real-life assignments in living labs. These labs, notably in Rome, and Newcastle, offer test cases for comparative cross-European analyses of the HERILAND skill set and for evaluation of best practices and critical success-factors in using these skills. In these labs, the HERILANDkey themes are leading in the selection of assignments. In Rome, for instance, assignments regard the regeneration of an industrial heritage landscape and also mass tourism in the world heritage centre. The ESRs will work on these assignments in groups, depending on the expertise necessary to carry out analyses; they will engage stakeholder groups and come up with concrete solutions and plans. The assignments are commissioned by HERILAND partners (e.g. municipality, heritage board).
